For sixteen years, the Basically Babies Layette Program has sought to meet the needs of infants born to families living in situations of extreme need through the provision of a complete wardrobe to outfit the baby for his/her first year. Basically Babies began informally in 1993, when a group of young mothers saw a need to help disadvantaged mothers and families with newborns living in the Edmonton community. In 2004, Basically Babies became a registered charity and began developing a decisive strategy for growth in hopes of continuing to meet the needs that arise in the greater Edmonton area. Not long after becoming a charity, Basically Babies moved from a basement to a small office on the south side of Edmonton. We outgrew that office within two years and have now moved to a 2,250 square foot warehouse and office that we are already rapidly outgrowing. We have gone from helping 10 to 20 families per year at the beginning to helping nearly 450 families in the 2008-2009 fiscal year and are anticipating helping up to 700 families in the 2009-2010 fiscal year. We have also built and developed relationships with over 60 charitable, non-profit, health care and social service agencies to ensure needs are being met across the entire community.
The size and quality of our layettes has also changed significantly over the years as the quantity and quality of donations has increased. We review our lists of items required in each layette annually to ensure we are continuously improving and assessing for quality and contents that will meet the needs most effectively.
